WhatsApp, the popular messaging app, has implemented various security measures to protect its users. These include end-to-end encryptions for all forms of communication, including text messages, videos, and voice notes.

However, some security experts argue that the platform could be more secure despite these precautions.

Recent incidents of surveillance have raised concerns about the potential for unauthorised access to personal information and devices.

Here are five strategies to enhance the security of your WhatsApp account:

  1. Activate end-to-end encryption: This feature, which is enabled by default, ensures that third parties cannot intercept or read your WhatsApp conversations. Consider using the ‘invisible messages’ option if you suspect your device is being monitored.
  2. Encrypt chat backups: When backing up your chats to the cloud, ensure encryption is turned on. That prevents companies like Google or Apple from accessing your stored content.
  3. Use Chat Lock: This feature provides an additional layer of security for sensitive conversations, particularly if you’re concerned about unauthorized access to your device.
  4. Silence and call relay for unknown callers: To protect against call scams, use this feature, which conceals your IP address during calls.
  5. Control status sharing with Instagram: WhatsApp is developing a feature allowing Instagram users to share their status updates directly via a shortcut. If you prefer not to use this feature, you can turn off the shortcut in the app settings.
