Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson sets off on a Space Perspective balloon mission to the Earth’s outer atmosphere.

As a co-pilot, Richard Branson will help navigate the mission to the edge of the atmosphere.

Branson flew a hot-air balloon across the Atlantic in 1987, which was followed by a remarkable record-setting Pacific flight in 1991.

Space Perspective, headquartered in Florida, is working on launching a balloon into the stratosphere.

Space Perspective plans to use a massive hydrogen-filled balloon to carry the Spaceship Neptune capsule, which can hold up to eight passengers, into the stratosphere.

Branson will participate in a series of exhilarating test flights before the full mission.

Distinct from the spaceflights of Virgin Galactic or Blue Origin, this expedition utilises a balloon to explore the stratosphere.

Designed for extended durations, Space Perspective balloon flights travel at the wind’s average speed, providing a six-hour experience.

“Some of the most magnificent experiences of my life have happened on ballooning expeditions and I’m excited to support Space Perspective in its journey.

“I’m passionate about adventure and helping fellow entrepreneurs reach their business dreams. I look forward to dusting off my old ballooning licence ahead of some magnificent test flights.” -Sir Richard Branson

Designed for long trips, Spaceship Neptune provides plenty of room for movement and even features a bathroom.

It will reach an altitude of 20 miles, allowing passengers to enjoy views of the Earth’s blue surface on one side and the vast expanse of space on the other.

On this journey, Branson will be accompanied by Taber MacCallum and Jane Poynter, the co-founders of Space Perspective.

Previously, in July 2021, Branson explored the final frontier of Earth on Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity spaceplane.

Last month, Space Perspective completed its first test flight using a capsule called Excelsior, generating interest from over 1,800 potential passengers for the Spaceship Neptune, which has a ticket price of $125,000 USD, £98,000 GBP, $190,000 AUD, $200,000 NZD, or €115,000 EUR for a single journey.
